    Previous work assumed that ATP synthase, the smallest known rotary motor in nature, operates at 100% efficiency. Calculations which arrive to this result assume that the water viscosity inside mitochondria is constant and corresponds to that of bulk water. In our opinion this assumption is not satisfactory for two reasons: (1) There is evidence that the water in mitochondria prevails to 100% as interfacial water. (2) Laboratory experiments which explore the properties of interfacial water suggest viscosities which exceed those of bulk water, specifically at hydrophilic interfaces. Here, we wish to suggest a physicochemical mechanism which assumes intramitochondrial water viscosity gradients and consistently explains two cellular responses: The decrease and increase in ATP synthesis in response to reactive oxygen species and non-destructive levels of near-infrared (NIR) laser light, respectively. The mechanism is derived from the results of a new experimental method, which combines the technique of nanoindentation with the modulation of interfacial water layers by laser irradiation. Results, including the elucidation of the principle of light-induced ATP production, are expected to have broad implications in all fields of medicine.

    Awesome. I'm making linkages to the other post on light polarization in water as well, and the scattering of light in water.
    "The origin of this pattern is the same as for the celestial pattern; photons are preferentially scattered towards an observer when their e-vectors are perpendicular to the plane passing through the observer, the light source and the point of scattering, and scattering is particularly favored at right angles. The pattern is actually more stable in water than in air for a given solar angle, since the light in air can be highly directional in clear skies and nearly omnidirectional under clouds, but underwater at moderate depths, the region of greatest brightness will always be near the refracted position of the sun in the sky, although the distribution of brightness will always be broad due to in-water scattering. Consequently, maximum polarization in water will be reduced compared with that in clear skies in air but greater than under cloudy skies in air, and the overall pattern of polarization is likely to be relatively insensitive to sky state except under heavy overcast (when the pattern should come to resemble that of Fig. 3). In his pioneering work, Waterman (Waterman, 1954) noted that the celestial polarization pattern has little influence on submarine polarization at depths exceeding a few meters. Our results support this conclusion; there is little or no suggestion of differences in the polarization pattern inside Snell’s window compared with the field as a whole. Thus, the patterns of polarization computed by Horváth and Varjú (Horváth and Varjú, 1995) for the situation in shallow water under a flat surface do not appear here. The loss of the atmospheric pattern is certainly due to its destruction by multiple-path scattering; in fact, Waterman (Waterman, 1954) noted that the atmospheric pattern is visible at depths of 2–3 m in very shallow and clear marine waters. Finally, polarization in water is surprisingly insensitive to wavelength"
