    Magnetic field over Chicxulub
    Although the location, approximate geometry, and magnetization strength of these alteration zones are well constrained by the magnetic field data, the nature of the magnetic phases and their origin are, as yet, unknown.

    The peak ring of the crater is composed of fractured granite-like rocks that were uplifted from a depth of approximately 10 kilometers.

    The team found evidence that subsurface rivers of water were heated and driven upwards towards the boundary between the floor of the impact crater and the bottom of the Yucatán sea. The hot water streamed around the edges of an approximate 3-kilometer thick pool of impact-generated magma, percolated through fractured rock, and rose to the seafloor where it vented into the sea. The hot water system was particularly intense in an uplifted range of mountains on the seafloor that form a 90 kilometer-diameter ring around the center of the crater. The rock core recovered from that peak ring is cross-cut by fossil hydrothermal conduits that are lined with multi-colored minerals, some, appropriately enough, a fiery red-orange color. Nearly two dozen minerals precipitated from the fluids as they coursed through the rock, replacing the rock's original minerals.

    Three-dimensional inversion of Chicxulub crater's magnetic field expression reveals shallow source bodies having concentric form to -45 km radius and a deeper central 20-25 km-radius peaked structure. The former are interpreted as representing highly magnetized zones in Chicxulub's melt sheet at the outer edges of the central uplift and collapsed disruption cavities; the latter represents the central structural uplift. The central uplift model that effectively represents the crystalline basement surface in the area also shows an -20 km wide surrounding moat which is though to represent the depression resulting from the fill of the collapsed disruption cavity (the basement surface is most depressed in this annular region).

    Since Chicxulub was formed in a shallow sea environment, an abundant source of water is readily available to supply the hydrothermal systems. The magnetization formed is remanent, in the direction of the geomagnetic field when impact occurred and is likely carried by magnetite and/or hematite. These zones map out volumes of increased hydraulic permeability, most likely faults and fractures, conducive to fluid flow.

    Borehole magnetic surveys in weakly magnetic sediments (Chicxulub crater) versus strongly magnetic volcanics - https://cdnsciencepub.com/doi/abs/10.1139/cjes-2018-0040 - May 2019 - After rotation into geographic coordinate space, borehole vector magnetic data from the Chicxulub impact crater in Mexico showed no evidence for any systematic change of magnetic property versus depth. What was originally interpreted as reversal stratigraphy has proved to be minor changes in borehole geometry.

    Chicxulub crater is the site where supercharged electrical discharge shaped not only the crater but the mountain in the middle of the crater.
