    This may answer some questions regarding the speed of evolutionary adaptations. Think of winding the DNA more tightly or exposing some parts of it more than others. All these alterations and more will change the expression of some genes relative to others. They are different forms of epigenetics than methylation or acetylation and quite responsive to aspects of the environment. Heat shock proteins seem to be a way to alter protein folding and DNA shape and therefore expression.
