Electrical Engineers Drs Langill and Brown just sent me the flicker results for our Light Panel. They also tested a competitor’s device that is claiming to have zero flicker effect. It turns out that was pure marketing hype based upon testing. The most popular USA red light therapy device has been reported to have +50% flicker but the engineers did not include that product.

“The good news is that both showed flicker as measured and calculated through oscilloscope measure at about 3.2 percent. However, here is the difference. While sinusoidal waves for both units are similar, harmonics are not. The Fire wave device has huge “noise” and scatter frequency which effects harmonics. The KLC panel is clean on this side – thus in our minds making a much better device.”

Harmonic voltages and currents in a Power System are a result of non-linear electric loads.

In a normal AC power system, the current varies sinusoidally at a specific frequency, usually 50 or 60 Hertz. When a linear electrical load is connected to the system, it draws a sinusoidal current at the same frequency as the voltage (though usually not in phase with the voltage).

Current harmonics are caused by non-linear loads. When a non-linear load, such as a rectifier/inverter, is connected to the system, it draws a current that is not necessarily sinusoidal. The current waveform can become quite complex, depending on the type of load and its interaction with other components of the system. Regardless of how complex the current waveform becomes, as described through Fourier Series analysis, it is possible to decompose it into a series of simple sinusoids, which start at the power system fundamental frequency and occur at integer multiples of the fundamental frequency.

Further examples of non-linear loads include common office equipment such as computers and printers, Fluorescent lighting, battery chargers, electronic ballasts, variable frequency drives, and switching mode power supplies.

Total Harmonic Distortion or THD is a common measurement of the level of harmonic distortion present in power systems. THD is defined as the ratio of total harmonics to the value at the fundamental frequency.

EFFECTS:

One of the major effects of power system harmonics is to increase the current in the system. This is particularly the case for the third harmonic, which causes a sharp increase in the zero sequence current, and therefore increases the current in the neutral conductor.

Electric motors experience losses due to hysteresis and losses due to eddy currents set up in the iron core of the motor. These are proportional to the frequency of the current. Since the harmonics are at higher frequencies, they produce higher core losses in a motor than the power frequency would. This results in increased heating of the motor core, which (if excessive) can shorten the life of the motor. The 5th harmonic causes a CEMF (counter electromotive force) in large motors which acts in the opposite direction of rotation. The CEMF is not large enough to counteract the rotation, however, it does play a small role in the resulting rotating speed of the motor.

 

How could I use these at my (wellness) resort?? Even one of these - better than an infrared sauna type? Has anyone used a Biomat? Said to have negative ions, infrared and crystals. just learning about differences...

Because $3,000.00 dollars for nothing more than 4 $10 bulbs, a stick frame, and some cloth... is highway fucking robbery.

 

And they are damn hot.

 

I understand regarding pricing (you can get it for $999 without the cloth since the MITOHQ doesn't have a cloth either).

However, the MITOQH has LED with low flicker and the incandescence light do NOT flicker so if flickering is bad for your body why not getting just the bulbs ?


Michael: yes they are hot. Have you tried the MITOHQ? If so, they are NOT hot?

 

There is Jacks post that indicates that flicker can be helped by using "normal" UVa light.

Good question. Some manufacturers still specify a cool specification -- "quantum efficiency"

The percentage of photons generated, relative to current (of electrons or holes) that is injected into the device is reflected in the IQE."

Bottomline, not all electron/holes are becoming photons and they will build up heat.

Note the low efficiency under 400 nm (aka UV).

From the top image you can see that red into IR efficiency is ~75%-40%. Even at 80% efficiency if you pack several 30W LEDs together you will generate heat that you must design around or watch the lights go out.

I labeled a custom made dual 20W IR LED system (with spectral overlap w red) for my In-laws. The label I wrote clearly says 1.2A max so nobody will every be confused if they ever had to reset the variable power supplyI set up that should never really need adjusting again anyway. My wife is visiting her father and sent mea text to ask "Is this supposed to be blindingly bright?" I asked her why. She said "Because this goes up to 3.2 Amps." I asked her to please turn it back down to 1.2 as son as possible. I have no idea how, but the lights still work.
