    This A to B stuff brings up a question I have about feet….I have a default to pronating…not terrible and I don't have "flat" feet, meaning I do have an arch, but I noticing that wearing moccasins for most of the summer that my knees are starting to hurt a bit….the question is : is an arch support in a shoe a crutch…a symptom soother, or does it actually work to signal the body to proper use…I'm thinking that I just have to keep attending to this and noticing my feet so that it becomes the new default…but then part of me wonders if I'm throwing everything off balance by not having the support?…can you change anything at a deep level if you are using "support" like this?

    Open to all opinions…..

    Plus I really want to find a DNS practioner…I need those infant exercises!

    Not an answer, but my experience...
    I grew up at a place/time where people put shoes on their infants. This may not be the cause, but nevertheless I've always had flat feet with more or less no arches. A bunch of years ago I injured my left foot, with what seemed to be permanent damage to the ligaments. When I stood on it, it sort of floated out and didn't really look much like a foot. Several doctors and specialists urged me to wear sturdy shoes, specially made inserts and to never ever walk barefoot. I did that for years, and I was ok, I suppose.
    Well, a few years back I was thinking, wondering if the doctors really, really knew. I started to walk barefoot (with socks) as much as I could. One day I realized that the undefined pain from my hips, knees and feet, which I had taken for granted, was gone. I bought myself a pair of FiveFingers and the last few years I have practically not worn any other shoes.

    This spring I had my feet scanned on a "foot scanning machine" and my arches are now considered normal. And both my feet look quite alike, like normal feet. :)

    So, for me, "good" shoes and special inserts were no real help.

    When going into shoes without heels many do get some kind of issues with their knees. Many overextend their knees in normal shoes and let that extension go on when going barefeet. Try to learn yourself to not do it, if you do it today.

    Overextending the knee also put extra burden on your lower back.


    In dance i often see this when someone forces themself into first position (ballet) without having a balanced posture. Also muscles to balance this is vital. Complex matter when i can not see you live.

    You can put extra strain on the lower back with arch support. I see things like that as a tool to use if you must survive the moment but not in the long run. Toes can also be stressed with extra support.

    Listen to what you feel, if you feel sore and tired, rest.

    Add on some dancing if possible, good for you body and soul plus it builds strong lowers.

    But all present models have a plastic bottom and a leather upper...

    So the best way is to simply use your feet in the dirt and they become natural fivefingers.

    I can feel that my toes haven't been doing enough work over the years…much more pressure/callus in the ball of my feet …since last year spending more time barefoot and wearing moccasins have started to wake up my toes.

    I'll continue to notice my knees…I remember my Alexander teacher showing me about the proper weight distribution over your bones…no tensing of knee muscles… I think my pain is from the rotation inward.

    This is what we use to address root cause hyperpronation, alongside barefoot walking and running to restore arch integrity

  14. Rotation inward predispoosed by ahort first metatarsal, happens in week 10 in the womb, from incomplete unwinding of the limb bud as it pronates and invaginates inward
    When it stops early the bug toe is left hanging in tbe air when the talus is in functional ideal. Check out the prokinetics

    I do have short toes and small feet for my height…

    I'll have to look up the word invaginate….sounds like a word we should all know:)

    I listened as well, really good stuff in there. Sounds like as an Osteo you are really similar to an ND in north america. My school teaches a lot of physical medicine so it was great to hear your knowledge in all the MSK stuff
  19. osteopathy schooling in australia is very broad and holistic so you can make of the training whatever you like, which is great.
