in some neurodegenerative diseases, there is dysregulation of the quality control system. either the autoimmune system is overactive and destroying healthy neurons before their time or underactive, and organelles- lysosomes primarily?-get clogged with cellular debris. also, with a leaky blood brain barrier (from nnemfs and/or chronic high blood sugar degrading pericytes at the BBB), there may be an overload of toxins that the quality control system cannot keep up with. valter longo and (borrowing from Longo's research) de vany emphasize strengthening the quality control system through fasting and refeeds and weight lifting.
