Anyone remember those fountain type lamps/ornaments that used optic fiber strands?

I was thinking today that it might be possible to place the lighting source and its electrical wiring in a remote location and "pipe" the light to where you want it sing optic fibres or cables . . . . .

I've also noticed quite a few devices nowadays have optical coms ports on them although I've never used one = wonder if they'd be a good alternative to wi-fi or even LAN cabling . . . .
