Nathan's Journey to Optimal

Hello fellow travelers! So I got some feedback that it would be a good idea to start a journal and after reading a few others' (I'm half way through Martin's) I think it will be really cool to track my progress and look back to see how far I've made it.

    A little background
I've been lucky to have good health for most of my life. That was until 8 or so years ago. That's when I started a gradual downhill decline. Very slow at first but it was more and more apparent as the years drove on. Occasional back pain turned into daily back pain, occasional restless nights became the norm, and then fatigue, brain fog, depression, confusion....

I would go for my daily checkups and my Dr. whom I had been going to for years would test my blood for the standard markers and always give me a clean bill of health. Looking back I think I just went along with what he said for the most part because I didn't want to admit to myself that something might be wrong. As things got worse I started to question more and my Dr. just chalked it up to me getting older. I'm 42 now so this was in my mid to late 30s and I wasn't buying into that.

I really didn't think I should be having the issues I was so started doing more and more research and eventually ended up seeing an integrative specialist who diagnosed me with Candida, Lyme, and heavy metal poisoning (mercury).

I started treatment in July 2012 so it's been just over a year. Things definitely got a lot worse before they started getting better. As first I didn't know what I was in for. I never really knew much about Lyme other than you get it from ticks. I figured I would take some meds and be better in a few months. Now I know better.

I made pretty good progress until late November 2012. That's when I gave myself permission to indulge and enjoy Thanksgiving. I had been alcohol and sugar free and the only carbs I had came from whole grains. But a few drinks and desserts over Thanksgiving weekend became more and more during the month of December with holiday parties in full swing. Then NYE and I had a vacation planned for the first week of February so I put off going back to my Lyme diet until after that. A full week of indulgence did me in and I paid for it for the next month. I was completely run down and feeling worse than I had in many months.

After a visit to my doctor she made me promise to go on the straight and narrow and I did. I was still eating whole grains though and thought I was doing the right thing.

    My transformation
I started getting better again after a month or so but I still couldn't gain any weight (went from 170 to 145 at one point) and my sleep was still terrible. While searching for ways to fix my sleep I came across the Leptin Rx and Cold Thermogenesis. I had heard of a paleo diet and never bought into it but after reading JK I decided to give it a try. This was a major leap for me.

You see I was raised my entire life being told brown rice is the end all be all for good health. My father is a macrobiotic counselor so that was my belief. But grains were just going through me and I couldn't gain any weight and I did notice I felt better on weekends when I would allow myself to indulge in a nice steak so I figured what the heck.

Now 3 weeks into the Leptin Rx and I'm feeling much better. I can't believe I am finally getting full and staying content. Before I would have a huge plate of grains and veg for dinner and be hungry 2 hours later. Now I can actually make it through the whole day without eating lunch. And I started gaining weight. That has now reversed now that I'm doing CT baths so I need to work on that.

Sleep has improved a little and I look forward to it getting better.

I had a visit with my Lyme doc today and had her give me scripts for a bunch of new labs (hormones, HS-CRP, alpha MSH, and some others). She had retested my for heavy metals and my mercury is down to a normal range so that was very good to hear.

Everyone has been great on this site and I appreciate all the great advice I have received so far.

I'm just reading away trying to suck up as much knowledge as I can. Currently up to EMF 4, am halfway through Epi-Paleo Rx and halfway through Martin's journey. Lots more reading to do.

Going to the beach this weekend and looking forward to soaking up some electrons.

nice.............We all want results. If we work hard but not smart, the bottom line will suffer. It is your job to make sure our efforts and results are in alignment. The costs of your efforts should never exceed your results on a consistent basis. If they do, something is drastically amiss. Whatever we hold in our mind will tend to occur in our lives. If we continue to believe as we have always believed, we will continue to act as we have always acted. If we continue to act as we have always acted, we will continue to get what we have always gotten. The definition of insanity is allowing the same trend to occur month after month and expecting a different result. If we want different results in our lives from our work, all we have to do is change our attitude and our mind about our perspective and results. Don't mistake thinking for action & don't mistake action for results......it might cost you a fortune.

Back from the beach and I had a wonderful time. I did a lot of grounding, soaked up a lot of sun, and hung out in the ocean for a good bit. I also had a ton of shrimp, oysters, and fish so got my share of electrons. Was actually hoping for colder water. I googled the temp and it was around 70. Will have to go back in the fall to do some CT in the ocean. I actually slept pretty well both nights I was there. Back home last night and sleep was so so. Definitely improving although slower than I would like.

I did CT last night and it had been a few days and I did it again tonight. I seem to be loosing my tolerance for the cold. I was almost up to 30 minutes before and struggled to make it to 20 minutes tonight. Perhaps because I missed a few days? Well, back at it for now and hopefully my tolerance goes up fast.

The Leptin Rx has been going well and I've gained a few more pounds, which is a very good thing because I've been really underweight. I had to stop wearing my wedding band sometime ago because I got so skinny it would slide right off my finger.

    Anyway, moving right along...

Yes Dr. Kruse, the beach is where it's at...no doubt. Can't wait to go back!

Thanks Martin. Read your story and glad to see all the progress you have made. How have you been feeling lately?

I've been feeling good and slightly frustrated. Feeling good about my Leptin Rx and CT and somewhat helpless and frustrated reading about EMFs. Just finished EMF 5 and dealing with the reality that I am in an EMF hot zone here in the DC metro area. My office building has wifi throughout so finally understand why I need to drink water constantly and am always thirsty. Will be looking into an electrician to install a kill switch in my upstairs. Have also been turning off my wifi when we don't need it but I still pick up wifi from a few neighbors. So I'll continue to research on further ways to mitigate EMFs and do the best I can.

I came to a realization the other day. A few years back before I knew I had Lyme and was just trying different things to feel better I took up meditation. I tried it for a year or so and was never good at it. I had a hard time turning off my mind and it just never clicked for me. Now I know why. I had meditated in my office...next to my pc that was always on and my wifi...so right at emf ground zero in my home. Mayhaps it's time to try again but grounded this time and away from wifi.

A question. I have had nights sweats twice within a week after doing CT. I used to get night sweats on and off and sometimes quite frequently however it's been some time since I've had them. Could CT have triggered these from releasing toxins into my body and that was my body's way of getting rid of them?

Anyway...continuing with CT and made it 20 minutes in the tub tonight. Hoping to break 30 minutes soon. :)

Have you read the iodine thread Nathan? and please listen to Jack's latest podcast....He goes into great depth about EMF's....all the stuff he has talked about repeatedly and written in his EMF series and the bootcamp....it is easier to wrap your head around when he is speaking about it....

Caroline, not yet but will add to the list. Currently on EMF 7. Just fascinating reading...but scary stuff these emfs...a part of me is like wtf...bury your head back in the sand...I don't want to know anymore! But I read on and except the reality of our situation. Really changes the way I look at things. A few years ago my sister went to nursing school and did really well and then after completing school decided she didn't want to pursue a career in nursing. I could never understand why but now I see the wisdom in her choice whether she realized it or not. She too has Lyme disease and I can only imagine what being around all of those additional emfs would have done to her health.

I've listened to some of JK's podcasts on emfs and have made some steps in the right direction. I now have grounds for my wife's and my laptops, got her a grounding strap for when she walks our dog. I go barefoot for now and am working through some blisters getting my bare feet used to it. I turn off our wifi when not in use, have unplugged numerous devices around the house. I have some electronic frequency devices to scare off rodents that I unplugged. I'm labeling my circuit breaker this weekend so I know which ones to kill at night.

Reading these blogs gives me the feeling I have a front row seat to scientific discovery on the level of Einstein and Darwin. Did Einstein and Darwin's contemporaries realize what they were on to at the time or did it take some years for mainstream acceptance? I never knew more than the basics around either but my interest has certainly piqued. This stuff is starting to sink in...although slower than I would like. As soon as I finish reading it all I'm going to reread because I know I'm missing a ton. I am having more and more ah-hah moments and my brain hasn't had to work this hard in a while.

Made it 30 minutes in the tub today doing CT. I chilled my chest first with my ice block and that seemed to make it a little easier. I started shivering pretty hard about 20 minutes in. I was reading emf 7 and my hand started shaking too much to read so I did deep breathing and focused on how my body felt and it helped and I was able to stop shivering. It's a cool sensation. My body itself doesn't feel that cold when I focus on my core. I also took my arms and feet out and that helped as well. Will have to work up to keeping my arms and feet in.

My hands and feet have always been cold, especially in the winter. My hands get cold super easy and when they get cold in the winter they ache. Has anyone who has experienced this had it go away once you cold adapt?

Nathan, try soaking your hands in ice water. I just started again after a long hiatus. The water filled w/ cubes was 35 degrees. The first several times I soaked a hand, I only lasted 15 seconds. I took several breaks of a minute or so, and then tried again. After 3 or 4 times, it was much easier. The next day I easily reached my goal of 4 minutes on the 1st try.

Try the same thing w/ your feet. Last winter I soaked both feet in 36 degree water for 60 minutes. 1st minute or so was tough, but the rest was pretty easy.

Bottom line ... try conditioning your hands and feet .... once you can handle ice soaking them, CT w/ hands and feet in the water should be much easier.

Hi Nathan, I'm curious, do you eat the BAB and don't eat again until dinner?

ATL Paleo, did your hands and feet stay warm all the time once they were conditioned? My feet have done pretty well with CT but I will start soaking my hands and see how that works. Thanks!

Hi Hemming, sorry BAB? I have been eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There have been a few days at work when I have been really busy and went straight through the day without eating and was fine. I could skip lunch more often if I wanted but I'm actually trying to gain some weight back so I normally eat lunch.

My hands adapted very quickly. The longest I ever soak them in cold ice water is 5 minutes. ... And I don't soak them that often.

After I was able to easily handle 5 minutes in 35 degree ice water, CT was never an issue w/ my hands. Disclosure: I don't do deep CT. The coldest I have done so far is 54 degrees.

Nathan ........ correction ........ reviewed my notes, and at the beginning of soaking my hands in ice water, I had a few sessions of 45 minutes ...... So Im not sure what length of time was required to condition my hands for CT. My hunch is that the initial shorter sessions were key. I know it works ... just experiment and see what works for you.

Got a few labs back. My MSH is still low but it increased to 14 from 3.2 so it's heading in the right direction. :) I asked my doctor to do a HS-CRP and is doesn't look like it was done. I think because my doctor asked why I wanted it and I said to check my Leptin so I think she decided to order a Leptin Serum test instead and it came back at <.5 ng/ml. Is it possible to have low Leptin and be Leptin resistant?

She did an HLA and the results indicate I'm at risk for mold illness so recommends an ERMI and MARCoNS. I don't think I have mold in my house but better to be safe. Was quoted a cost of ~$290. Can anyone recommend a quality mold test that is cheaper?

I took a VCS test and failed. Will ask my doctor for CSM and Actos and will get more consistent taking my activated charcoal and chlorella to help with my detox.

I had night sweats again last night. I think CT is causing me to detox and then I'm sweating it out at night. Sleep has been worse lately

I did a hormone saliva test over the weekend so interested to see those results.

Sticking with the Rx and carrying on.

Told a buddy of mine of this site and he's going to give the Leptin Rx a go as well. He's had some health issues over the years and I look forward to his positive results.
