My journey from frustration to success

    Well my chosen topic name is one of faith and hope rather than fact at this stage. I'm feeling very frustrated, but with hope as Jack's material gives me some reasons for feeling as I do.

    I've been ill all my life - 6 decades of it though I'm now fitter and healthier than I've ever been thanks to going paleo some five or so years ago. But I have what I believe Jack would call mitochondrial problems. My successes first: for the first time in my life I have no depression. I stopped taking 5-HTP in November and for the first time I've not fallen back into the depressive state. I've lost 20 kilos over the past 5 years without putting on more than 2 kilos on my blips when I wasn't as paleo as I should be. When I had lost 18 kilos I got a DEXA scan which said I was still 48% fat, so it seems I have a lot more to lose - always assuming the scan is accurate.

    This year I've decided to take Jack's material very seriously so I first went epipaleo, limiting my fruit and eating mussels for breakfast and fish for either lunch or tea. Lamb for about 4 meals a week. Herbs, vegetables and salad plus coconut oil with just a little fruit make up the rest of what I eat. I'm doing face dunking most days and a cool bath each night before bed. Its a cool bath because our cold water here is 75-80F and when I added ice to my belly I ended up with horrendous urticaria on my upper arms that has still to go down. So I reckon that a cool bath is better than not doing it, while my O3 and O6 parameters in my arms improve - not a problem on my torso.

    Yesterday I had to work physically quite hard and I used up all my energy. I volunteer at a thrift shop and we were redisplaying all the books so it meant taking all the books out of the shelves, moving the shelves and reorganising the displays. Heavy work. I did another 90 minutes today and that was all I could do before I had to stop. Interestingly I have much more strength than the other women. I just have no stamina at all - well I have three hours on day 1 and 90 minutes on day 2. Tomorrow is karate night so I want to restock my mitochondria before then, so I'll not be doing much between now and then.

    I have been reading and reading here on the blog and forum and today I went to buy the mitochondrial supplements but was very frustrated to find they won't send the co-enzyme Q 10 to Australia, nor the PQQ, nor the K2. Don't know why but it goes through Amazon and there's lots that Amazon won't send here for some reason, though we can get it from other companies. They will send the magnesium threonate but its expensive to just send one bottle on its own. The coQ10 they sell here is the ubiquinone variety and I've been assured at two shops that its the same as the unbiquinol, but from what I've read that is not the case.

    So despite really not liking fish, really disliking - hating really - cold water, and feeling really limited because I have autoimmune disease and having to cut out eggs, dairy, nuts and nightshades, but I really, really want health. I've had glimpses of health and wellbeing and I want more of it. And despite not liking to eat before 7am I AM eating withing half an hour of dawn, eating fish, doing CT and looking to locate the recommended supplements. Please I feel a need for some encouragement.

    Congrats on catching little glimpses of success too. Nothing like those to help strengthen your resolve to stay on the path [​IMG]

    Lovely, immediate feedback. That is very affirming. I was feeling so frustrated about it all today. I'll put in an order tonight, so thanks very much for the use of your code to get $10 off.     What noone tells you about health is that it isn't just the absence of nasty symptoms. Its a sense of wellbeing and feelings that are so qualitatively different from just not feeling sick. Just before Christmas I had some mornings when I was leaping out of bed at dawn (5am) just because it felt so good to be alive. I've never felt like that in all my life. I've always just dragged myself around. But these were just glimpses and didn't last. However I am hoping they will become my new normal, when I get these mitochondria sorted out.

    Welcome Aussie Nana. It sounds like you have accomplished so much - I hope things get much better too and really fast
    I just got a bunch of stuff from Life extension - a couple of things that iherb would't ship. I think melatonin and pregnenolone and Suoer K. They have great prices if you order a bunch altho they do charge for shipping.
    It sounds like you have everything under control as far as the protocols go. It becomes a lifestyle and who knows - you may even love fish one day[​IMG]
    Ae you eating canned mussels? I really have a hard time with the canned stuff! Have you tried making ceviche yourself? It is much more yummy and have you tried raw meat yet? and what about Inger's MHS?

    Thank you Caroline for the welcome. I just need to get the stuff Jack recommends for the mitochondria immediately. Then I'll be aiming to get some lab work done as per Jack's suggestions. I'm not sure whether my doctor will write the script for them. I go to a bulk billing clinic now as I never got to see my doctors even when I paid lots as they were never there when I needed an appointment so it didn't seem much point to go where I had to pay. But it does mean I don't have an ongoing relationship with them. it would be nice to get as much done under Medicare as I can though I know I will have to pay for my hormonal panels.

    No I'm not eating canned mussels. I buy frozen New Zealand Green Lipped Mussels (not in shells) for $13 to $15 a kilo which I think is reasonable. I've also found a place that sells really cheap ocean caught fish - $12 a kilo so I'm feeling really pleased. I don't know what ceviche is - I'd better google it. I haven't eaten raw meat, except for some lambs fry which was very strong and I wouldn't eat any more of that particular one. In fact the dog might get the lot. I think it might have come from old ewe, not a lamb. Not sure what Inger's MHS is - could you enlighten me? And no to banana bread. Does it have almond meal in it? I'm off nuts and eggs till I get my autoimmune diseases under control.

    Inger's MHS - mackerel head smoothy - there is lots of posts about it in the nutrition threads - I just buy a packet of small frozen fish at the chinese store and let one thaw a little and then add some water and coriander or parsley and fresh lemon juice and blend until smooth. I just drink quickly and have a mouthful of wine after it!
    ceviche is chopped up scallops or salmon or white fish etc. and add some green onions and lime juice -etc. Inger has a lovely recipe for salmon too with pictures.
    Have you had steak tartar? it is the same principal.
    re testing - do you know about the lab - Healthscope? if you go to their website you will find a functional medicine catagory. You can get saliva/cortisol testing and melatonin testing. The Docs should be able to order most things for you - but you need a good back story to impress them with your need for all the testing. I had to pay for rT3 and something else - I can't remember. Just remember - they only want to check TSH and that is useless - you will need free T3 & free T4 and rT3. Before you do it - let me know and I can go over my stuff with you if you want. If your Doc writes down the right stuff - re symptons - on the requisition form he covers his butt. I don't know if I am making any sense -I"m tired!! If I left out important words let me know tomorrow! Do you skype?

    Raw for me was an evolution - first I added seafood, then some raw seafood (which was ok because I like sushi and sashimi), then ceviche (which was surprisingly easy and yummy once I actually tried it) and then steak tartare and now raw meat. Just go at your own pace, and trying new things can be fun!

    Hi Aussie Nana, I thought you are in Australia?
    Well, this is what I did. Since the Ubiquinol ist very expensive, when you buy it bottle by bottle and since we are supposed to take a lot (I take minimum 1 g per day) I ordered 2 kg from a distributor. This I encapsulated myself with 500 mg each, so I just need to take 2 capsules per day and it is CHEAP compared. Why don't you guys get together and purchase some for all of you and encapsulate it yourself? Here in Germany I buy it for around EUR 800,-/kg, so it is 0,80 EUROCENT per day for a gram (+ the empty capsules which is almost nothing). If you cannot do the encapsulation, then ask a pharmacist to do it for you. But you can buy a little devide that does 120 capsules in one go. Its done in 1 hr. I do that now with all my supplements, as for example I also take a lot of K2 and D3 and others. Rather than having to eat 50 capsules a day (K2 for example is only 5mg, all the other is fillers), I stuff a lot of it in one capsule. Cuts really down on all the capsules I have to swallow and it is so much cheaper. I share them with friends, and so it is a good thing for all of us. I would gladly offer, but since it has to cross the border, I do not know if it gets hung up in customs. It might work though since it is private.
    So, if you are interested, we can come up with a plan.

    I think Jack is confusing WA in the US with WA here in Australia. I think Spokane might be in Washington state - is that right those of you in the US?

    Now it would be really great if we could get Jack to come to WA in Australia! But we would have to find a strong enough reason to make the trek here worthwhile.

    Thank you for all your welcomes. I'll have to answer specific points a little later as my eyes have flared up again (AI disease) so I can't be online as much as I would like. I was feeling sorry for myself wondering why when I thought I had done everything right. Then I realised I had bought some lovely fresh green beans. Not sure if they could cause the flare up, but I forgot that I shouldn't be eating them. I wasn't thinking legumes. I was thinking fresh green veg! Now its back to frquent steroid drops so I don't permanently lose eye sight.

    @ Caroline I'll have to look into this ceviche stuff and also explore the nutrition part of this forum. I'm having trouble just reading all Jacks stuff and putting it into effect but it looks like I need to share my time with all the forum people too.
    @ Ashryn - Yes I live in the northern suburbs of Perth. How about you? City, rural or remote?
    @ Diane - thanks for the welcome. You have good advice to go at my own pace.
    @ Charlotte - thanks for your offer. I'm not sure how much ubiquinol I need yet, nor for how long I'm likely to need it. But if I'm a really heavy user then this would be a good idea. I know I can bring in ordinary amounts for personal use through customs but I'm not sure how customs would feel if I brought it into the country by the kilo!
    @ DArleen and @PaulaLynn thanks for your welcomes and we'd love to see you here in Australia.

    Today, little energy. I even had an afternoon nap in the hope that I'll have some to go to karate tonight. I took up karate just under two years ago at the age of 60 and I love it. Last year I was doing three classes a week and making great strides but then I found I couldn't stand the physical pace. I just didn't have the energy for that amount of activity so I have scaled back to just one class for the last 4 months with the idea of improving my health to improve the amount of energy I have.

    I was going to aggressively treat my red eye with steroids as per my specialists instructions but I've backed off and only used one dose and things aren't getting worse and I'm just observing at the moment, making the decision hour by hour. FAce dunking hasn't had any effect on reducing my adrenaline runs. Its now a fortnight I've been doing it.

    Smehow I suspect it will never get cold enough here for Dr K and I can't imagine him heading all this way just for the two of us.. Though there is a pretty dogmatic xfit paleo community here he might want to smash!

    Hey... If you're doing the leptin reset, you should slack off on the karate for 6-8weeks.. Give your body a chance to make new energy making pathways, otherwise you'll be exhausted, and your results will be slower.
