    Rules of the game?
    Influence of behavior?

    Why do some patterns follow an entropy or enthalpy outcome?
    Is it possible to predict the “set” that will eventually die or create?

    Probability theory is an abstraction of imaginary thought. This may be fun,
    I look for verifiable steps within the “set” of scientific objectivity.

    I see the Modified-Set-Theory to be a better mathematical form for studying probability.

    Physicists demonstrated that reality doesn't exist until we measure it. Why is this a big deal when Schrodinger figured this out 100 years ago?
    This is a great question. To understand the big deal revealed by the necessity of quantum mechanics, we have to go back at least 300 years, to Isaac Newton.

    Newton and the beginnings of modern progress

    Newton grew up in the middle of a long-term effort to discover the Laws by which the universe ran, presumably Law created by God. The first goal in this - centuries earlier - was the understanding of God.

    Newton’s development of the laws of motion and gravity were a landmark discovery. On a practical level, they demonstrated that we could predict everything from the flight of a cannonball to the motion of the planets using observation and mathematics. The universality of this law gave two results. First, it made us seem closer to understanding God, because we understood one simple law that did so much. Second, it made us care less about God and more about progress and our own ability to achieve it.

    From 1600 on, Western civilization was guided by a general ethic and philosophy of progress that came to be called modernism. The chief idea was that Man would soon understand and be able to thoroughly control Nature. This was seen as a good thing. First, it was believed, we could conquer famine and plague. Then we could redesign ourselves, eliminating human defects and bringing an end to war, struggles for power, and man’s inhumanity to humanity.

    By 1900, many people were convinced we were at the edge of success. In 1899, the head of the US Patent Office declared that everything useful to be invented had already been invented. (The Wright Brothers would prove him wrong four years later.) The Encyclopedia Britannica was preparing it’s 1911 edition, which many people thought would be the last one we would ever need.

    It was a rosy view, and a foolish one. If you want to understand the nature of the philosophical error, read The Abolition of Man by C. S. Lewis. In chemistry and medicine, the successful reduction of the scourge of bacterial infections has simply changed the ways in which we get ill, and not led to the end of all disease. If you want to see the errors in philosophy, ask how this thinking led to the Nazi holocaust, destructive eugenics programs even in the US, and the Existentialist philosopher Sartre supporting the Khmer Rouge bloody genocidal slaughter of millions of Cambodians.

    Cracks appear in the modern worldview

    Meanwhile, scientists were trying to plug a few holes that were appearing where observations and experimental results could not be explained. Einstien led the way. First special relativity explained the Lorenz transformations and showed how they could be used. Then General Relativity expanded Newton once more and laid open a way of understanding the cosmos.

    It took time for people to understand the implications of Einstien’s solutions to what, at first, seemed like small issues. In fact, he brought an end to the order of the Newtonian universe as profound as the end of the Earth-centered Ptolemaic view created by Newton, Brahe, Galileo, and Copernicus. General relativity eliminated all absolute frames of reference. No longer was stillness different from motion, or steady movement different from acceleration. The notion of progress and all modernism based on it was beginning to fall apart. As Yeats put it (though he was talking of religion),

    Turning and turning in the widening gyre,
    the falcon cannot hear the falconer.
    Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold

    The Laws of Relativity were the first major revolution that challenged all of the ideas of modernism and progress.

    Einstein launched the second one, as well. This is rarely recognized, even though he won the Nobel Prize for doing it. Einstein discovered the law of the photoelectric effect and opened the field of quantum mechanics.

    At this point, we enter into the second revolutionary discovery, the one that ended the dream of being able to predict, and therefore master, the physical universe. Schrodinger, Heisenberg, and Bohr worked on these issues alongside Einstein and opened the world of Quantum Mechanics.

    Once Heisenberg stated succinctly that we cannot define the location and velocity of a single particle simultaneously, as measuring one will inevitably change the other in unpredictable ways, all hope of controlling the universe through application of Newton’s laws (or even of relativity) vanished.

    The first answer to your question: This is the consequences of the discoveries of the early quantum physicists, including Schrodinger. All of modernism and the myth of progress came crashing to a halt.

    Why does today’s research matter?

    If all of these questions were raised in the first half of the 20th century, why do the experiments that physicists doing quantum mechanics matter today? In particular, what is the significance of the Australian experiment cited in the question?

    In the early 20th century, there was little experimental evidence of quantum mechanics, and all of it was microscopic. That is beginning to change. Experimental physicists are beginning to create sub-atomic quantum events with visible, real-world results. The result of such an experiment is that we are closer to seeing things that should be impossible - such as a future event influencing or causing a past event - in ways that could make a difference in day-to-day life.

    Current theory has several ways of handling this. With only theory available, we cannot say which theory is most accurate. As these experiments are performed, we may be able to eliminate some theories and validate others, or at least show that some theories are more likely than others. If we continue on that path, it can lead to practical results, just as a basic understanding of quantum mechanics has allowed us to develop semiconductor electronics.

    Where are we now?

    We are beginning to cope with the implications of general relativity. We even make use of its local effects in the Global Positioning System (GPS).

    We are getting some things - such as electronic engineering - out of quantum mechanics. We are barely dealing with its larger implications.

    So far, few people seem to be coping with the bigger issue: We an only explain the physical world we see using two models: General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics. We need the first to explain 99% of all ordinary phenomena. We need the other to explain important elements, and now, even elements that can be brought into ordinary view without exceptional equipment, and to manufacture our electronic devices. And we have proven that the two systems are fundamentally and permanently irreconcilable.

    But wait, it gets worse. When relativity eliminated any frame of reference and quantum mechanics eliminated ordinary notions of time and space, all that was left for us to rely on was math and logic. They, at least, are consistent, and can provide a complete explanation of some things.

    Sorry, not so. Kurt Godel demonstrated this back in 1931 when he published his incompleteness theorems.

    He demonstrated that any logical system from which we can derive mathematics will have at least one theorem that must be true, but cannot be proven. Worse, it can be proven both true and false. Worse, if it is true and false, then every other theorem is both true and false, and the entire system of mathematics and logic is self-contradictory.

    This is a mess who’s implications we have not yet begun to deal with.

    A bug is about to confuse a lot of computers by turning back time 20 years

    The GPS "clock" ticks back to zero every 19.7 years, and some computers aren't handling it well. In an echo of the Y2K bug, a flaw in some computer software is causing it to turn back time to the early 2000s.
