Jack, the two cross-quarter causeways of the Giza necropolis are 14 degrees away from due east, while the third causeway is due east. Is it coincidence that the eye's blind spot is approximately 12-15 degrees from the fovea? Sounds like the first two causeways would be a handy aiming device for the best sunlight absorption on the equinox and the solstice. Since the sun is 28 degrees away from due east, take the Great Pyramid's causeway for the summer solstice, and the Pyramid of Khafre's causeway for the winter solstice. Take either for the spring or autumn equinox.

no idea. I don't think anyone knows what the Egyptians really knew except that they followed the sun and light in a big way.
