ever since I got off sleeping pills about 1 and a half or 2 yrs ago I have taken several supps before bed. Melatonin I have used for years and then I added GABA and magnesium. sometimes I add valerian. Plus over the counter progest cream which my gyno says is placebo. This to get off Ambien. I do ok on this protocol....with some patchy nights. I get up 2-3 times per night to pee.....(not a good sign).
Please hack my sleep! Is it bad to take these supplements for extended time? Which ones should I quit? Or what labs should I have done?

Have you done a melatonin test? I take melatonin before bed as well. I think JK doesn't like melatonin and I keep forgetting to ask. Are you really paying attention to light cycles? Have you done a cortisol saliva test?

I believe Jack likes melatonin supplements only for a few reasons, jet lag is one of them, and I think for a short term to recover from something else (injury?). Not long term use. I had purchased some melatonin just before I heard him say that, and they have been sitting, unopened, in the cabinet for a long time.

Janagram do you know your DHEA levels as well? And have you done any grounding outside? My best sleep comes when I've been outside for large parts of the day - even before I knew the benefits of grounding. :)

No, I don't know these levels. good place to start. thank you....I do not get enough sleep. ever. 5 hrs is about it.
  6. While Valerian is often considered a sedative, for some people it has the opposite effect, and works to stimulate rather than sedate. Other, more reliable sedative nervines include Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora), California Poppy, Hops, and Pulsatilla. You can sometimes find them in combination. I have found herbal sedatives to be very useful for some people and situations.

Me too, always sleep better after a day outside whether summer or winter. I have not read on my laptop in the evening for quite awhile now and my sleep is getting awesome. I don't have internet until my dh brings it home (that is usually late too) plus I live in the country where it has been tough to get internet in the first place. I only take my oral progesterone 1/2 my cycle and 1 mag malate now at bedtime and I actually sleep and could sleep some more if I had more time in the am. I am a true believer in the wrong light and emfs screwing us up.

Have you consulted Jack yet? With sleep like that, I think it would be a good investment. Without quality sleep, we are nothing. I really wonder how much autophagy you really have going on if you have to take all that stuff to keep your eyes closed at night? I feel for you and hope you find some good answers to get some real sleep soon.

janagram, Do you ever CT in the evening? Even face? What's the temps in your room when you sleep? The cooler the better...

Would your MD be willing to give you 'real' PG (in pills) for your luteal phase at least? Do you notice your sleep getting worse with different phases in the cycle or is it always bad? Dr K has said oral PG pills may help with sleep, and it does wonders for me....of course that's my N=1 and YMMV but could be worth a try??

Have you tried drinking less starting in the very early evening to see if that helps with getting up for the bathroom at night? Or is it all the same?

Who gave you the sleeping pills? A sleep specialist? If so could you do a sleep study? I did one and learned I had pretty bad sleep apnea.

Have you always had sleep issues??

What about meditation, a calming routine at night? And no stress either in addition to darkness...if I get upset it's harder for me to relax well at night.

    Good luck!

I don't mean to be a wet blanket here, but my DHEA level is great (with 100 mg per day supplementation), but I did not notice much of an effect on my sleep. I still have to take 3 mg of melatonin at night...but if I do, I get a solid 8 hours of wonderful, dream filled refreshing sleep. Works for me...and melatonin is a great antioxidant.

Janagram, I had a bad experience with Ambien about 3-4 years ago. My doctor prescribed it because my sleep was so horrible at that time. Even melatonin wasn't having the desired effect. I loved it at first because my sleep was so much better. At six months, I had to talk her into a refilling the prescription...was pretty dependent on it by that point.

The bad stuff started happening when I went through a horribly stressful period in my life. IBS was acting up and had meds for that and Xanax. The combination of stress with the meds was not good. I started having short-term memory issues - had stickies everywhere!. Also very foggy thinking, and even had a hard time driving in the morning (like driving from home to work and thinking, where did the time go in between the two points?). That was my wake up call.

I weaned off of them by breaking in half and then quarters. I was not happy to lose the "sleep" but it wasn't a natural sleep. Things are better now. I sleep well most of the time.

Glad you are off the Ambien.

ayyyyy......yi...well, it's a slippery slope with drugs. Been there....had to get off Xanax and Ambien, but sleep has never been as good. ( a period of extreme anxiety got me into it). I'm interested in the sleep rx. I'll try to order it.

Kathylu, that is great Melatonin helps you! It totally messed up my sleep 10 years ago. But even on my own I seem to be dreaming a lot more, remembering the dreams and having them be so vivid. Once I dreamt of Dr Kruse driving and having a car accident, hurting his knee but getting out of the car and then talking to the guy that hit him about CT. Last night I dreamt of a jumping big fish in a river that jumped really high and he could talk (maybe I'm looking too much at whole fish at the grocery store). It's the funkiest kinds of dreams I have ever had.

Did you do any Melatonin testing before you took it? Part of me wants to try again but I haven't been tested...

Are you sure that was a dream? Just sayin'...

My dreams are back too! Even a solution came to me in my sleep. We had a problem how to protect atypically sized basement window and well. Isn't it amazing how our brain works?

My hubby was totally impressed with my out of box solution :)! And he is an engineer!

Yeah, it was weird. All these dreams are so vivid. Now when I look at a fish I think of that jumping fish from my dream. LOL
