Effects from wearing dentures?

Discussion in 'Ask Jack' started by CarolandNick, Jan 26, 2019.

  1. I have been wanting to ask about the negative effects from wearing dentures for a long time - but I think I have been a little scared to hear the answer. :(
Instinctively, I know that breaking the contact between my tongue and the roof of my mouth must not be a good thing. I am still suffering from the shock of loosing my teeth emotionally, and find it very difficult to look in the mirror when I don't have my denture in place, and I can't face other people seeing me without them. This means I wear them all the time.
When I finally realised I had to loose my teeth, I decided that implants were going to be more of a problem. I didn't want metal in my jaw. I checked out the material the denture is made from with my kinesiologist to get the best out of a bad choice, but it is still an acrylic compound.
I am ready to up my game and do what I can to mitigate a bad situation.

I am a new denture wearer myself. The dentist was surprised that I opted for dentures over implants, as I too didn't want to walk around with titanium implants creating an antenna in my head. My concern is his warnings of bone loss from where teeth were removed and wonder if anything can be done to mitigate that.
