Cholesterol and the brain........

I have argued that cholesterol is an important nutrient in this group. I mentioned that 25% of the body's cholesterol is in the brain, and thus, eating animal fats is good for neurological health.

Then some food guru told me that cholesterol doesn't cross the brain barrier. (LOL) The following study shows that maybe cholesterol can cross the brain barrier after all.

Apparently some studies have shown that low serum cholesterol is present in people with mental issues (citing):

"One body of research asks if cholesterol levels correlate with mental function in the absence of cholesterol-lowering medications. A 1998 review of studies that examined the relationship between cholesterol levels and violence concluded that the data "consistently showed increased violent death and violent behavior in persons with low cholesterol levels."

But cholesterol science is very much tied to financial interests. Those who are paying for studies to be done have a vested interest in proving that lowering cholesterol in the body (via statins) will have no significant effect on how much cholesterol is available for the brain.
