Carotenoids: They are hugely important in quantum biology.

    Carotenoids are organic pigments that are found in the chloroplasts and chromoplasts of plants and some other photosynthetic organisms, including some bacteria and some fungi. Carotenoids can be produced from fats and other basic organic metabolic building blocks by all these organisms. The only animals known to produce carotenoids are aphids and spider mites, which acquired the ability and genes from fungi. Carotenoids from the diet are stored in the fatty tissues of animals, and exclusively carnivorous animals obtain the compounds from animal fat.
    Carotenoids are photoinactivators for our eye clock. When excessive blue is present more Vitamin A is made initially, before it becomes extinct in the macula. Why?

    Ever heard of Carotenoid protection?

    Most photosensitizers are organic dyes, but we use carotenoids and parts of proteins as photosensitizers and inactivators.

    Carotenoid protection takes singlet oxygen and extincts it. Singlet O2 + 1CAR = triplet O2 + 3CAR
    The deactivation 3CAR >1CAR + liberation of heat or IR light.

    Photosensitizers have rules......quantum optical rules they must follow.

    1. Excitation
    2. Decays
    3. Type 1 or Type 2 reactions (which are O2 dependent)

    After absorption of light photons, the photosensitizer is first transferred to an excited singlet state by the quantized energy in the photon. Then 3 possible decay channels are possible. This is why quantum physics works on probabilities and not absolutes. The 3 cases are non radiative, radiative singlet state decay to the ground state, and intersystem crossing to an excited triplet state.

    The last one, may also promote a reaction leading to the singlet ground state by either non radiative decay or by radiative triplet decay. The radiative decays are called fluorescence and phosphorescence, respectively. Life time for fluorescence are on the order of nanosecond time scales where phosphorescence may last up to milliseconds or even seconds. According to Foote (1968), two alternative reaction mechanisms exist for the decay of the excited triplet state which are called Type 1 or 2 reactions. They are characterized by either the generation of free radicals (Type 1) reactions, or the transfer of excitation energy to oxygen molecules directly in a Type 2 reaction.

    During Type 1 reactions the triplet state next interacts with a target molecule or protein, other than oxygen. Stop and think about mitochondria now at cytochrome 1 and what should happen seasonally for mitophagy. Type 1 reactions result in the release of free neutral or ionized radicals. We use these to signal. Further reaction with triplet oxygne may also lead to the formation of hydrogen dioxide or superoxide. Where have you heard that before?

    In Type 2 reactions, the triplet state of the photosensitizer directly interacts with molecular triplet oxygen (3O2) which is then transferred to an excited singlet state of (1O2). During this reaction the electronic spins are flipped of the electrons in oxygen.

    Both reactions are designed to occur simultaneously but when the environment around a mitochondria is altered by pseudohypoxia the Respiratory Quotient can be altered dramatically. The reason for this is because all electrons in ECT are designed to move to oxygen for reduction. Their flow is 100% dependent upon the electron density, size of the respiratory chain proteins, and the amount of oxygen present at the end of the respiratory chain. This makes pseudohypoxia within the mitochondria a very powerful environmental variable because it controls the pull of electrons in ECT. Pull in ECT is measured in voltage. So pseudohypoxia means that voltages in mitochodria are falling and that means the magnetic field developed in mitochondria have diminished.

    Excited singlet oxygen is very reactive. It leads to cellular oxidation, mitochondrial swelling and necrosis. Weishaupt in 1968 identified singlet oxygen as the TOXIC agent in photoactivation of tumor cells.

    Carotenoids promote the toxic singlet oxygen to triplet oxygen which is harmless................

    Now...........blue light increases singlet oxygen.

    Did you know that diabetics have no measurable superoxide?

    With pseudohypoxia and blue light exposure you make singlet oxygen over triplet superoxide...........that is the reason why diabetes and most anterior eye diseases are blue light over exposures. This is why we see alterations in Vitamin A in the brain. We are using carotenoids up in tissues chronically exposed in blue light diseases.........and once it is used up there are severe downstream effects..............singlet oxygen predominates in a microwaved blue lit world and you never see triplet superoxide again until you get rid of this bad mitochondria.

    Since type 1 and 2 reaction occur simultaneously, quantum mechanics dictates the path of least resistance. Which probability or mechanism is chosen depends solely on the concentration of oxygen and available triplet oxygen and the appropriate target molecules................

    Retina is also loaded with xanthophylls especially in the macula. Yellow frequencies also affect the pigmented retinal epithelium where as red frequencies were useful in retinal detachments. Retinal detachments happens most frequently in myopia. I fully expect this to be one of the most common things in the human trip to Mars. Xanthophylls were originally called phylloxanthins in the literature are yellow pigments that occur widely in nature and form one of two major divisions of the carotenoid group; the other division is formed by the carotenes. The name is from Greek xanthos(ξανθός, "yellow") and phyllon (φύλλον, "leaf"), due to their formation of the yellow band seen in early chromatography of leaf pigments.

    Myopia = blue light toxicity

    Nearsightedness, or myopia, is the most common refractive error of the eye, and it has become way more prevalent in recent years. 70% of refractive errors tie back to the changes in corneal shape and size and these are due to the change in size of shape of the eye ball. When nnEMF is around........so will myopia.

    In fact, a recent study by the National Eye Institute (NEI) shows the prevalence of myopia grew from 25 percent of the U.S. population (ages 12 to 54) in 1971-1972 to a whopping 41.6 percent in 1999-2004. In Asia the story is a lot worse.

    So how do your eye and plants marry in quantized fashion?

    Like other carotenoids, xanthophylls are found in highest quantity in the leaves of most green plants, where they act to modulate light energy and perhaps serve as a non-photochemical quenching agent to deal with triplet chlorophyll (an excited form of chlorophyll), which is overproduced at high light levels in photosynthesis. High light levels means high photosynthetic capacity or summer time when blue light is massive up regulated in sunlight to drive ubiquitination.

    The xanthophylls found in the bodies of animals, and in dietary animal products, are ultimately derived from plant sources in the diet. For example, the yellow color of chicken egg yolks, fat, and skin comes from ingested xanthophylls, primarily lutein, which is often added to chicken feed for this purpose.

    The yellow color of the human macula lutea (literally, a yellow spot we neurosurgeons see daily) in the retina of the eye results from the lutein and zeaxanthin it contains, both xanthophylls again requiring a source in the human diet to be present in the eye. This is one of the secrets buried in the Epi-paleo Rx. Shellfish is loaded with these chemicals. This is why you need to read and assimilate my book. Do I mention this in the book? No. Why? The quantum effect is between the words of the book and if you act upon the ideas you won't need to know the reason, you'll get the benefit. This is why wild animals like the hippo do not have to be told what to eat, they just do it because they are wild and driven by instinct. Modern humans feel they need to be told what to do because they are zoo animals who create their environment. Most of the things we create ruin our wild ancestors instincts. These xanthophylls in shellfish protect the eye from ionizing blue and ultraviolet light, which they absorb to limit the excitation in our retina. It is like a built in natural fuse box. It protects the vitamin A cycle in our eye that is required for photoreceptor regeneration of all the opsins we have as humans. In blue light toxic state you lose these chemicals and the result is a cataract. These two specific xanthophylls do not function in the mechanism of sight, since they cannot be converted to retinal (also called retinaldehyde or vitamin A aldehyde). They do protect melanopsin in the central retina which drives the eye clock (SCN). Their arrangement is believed to be the cause of Haidinger's brush, an entoptic phenomenon that allows to perceive the polarization of light.

  16. This makes me very interested in the therapeutic use of both astaxanthin and methylene blue, though "homeopathic" doses of methylene blue, as opposed to the doses typically taken by people seeking "nootropic effects".
  17. We use Pigment density testing to determine the amount of carotenoids in the macula. Low pigment density is associated with poor outcomes and light sensitivity. Testing uses haidinger brushes. Easy test to run and supplements work if natural and high concentration. Thanks Jack for explaining the the mechanisms underlying this process.

  19. Sometimes one looks seemingly forever for the answer to a vexing question.
    I needed glasses at 11. As I matured through college and dental school, I realized there had to be an reason other than what my ophthalmologist and optometrist gave me - that it was genetic. Even at the time I knew full well that it couldn’t have been for my ancestors that supposedly carried such a gene would have literally been tiger bait way way before I showed up.
    Of course - it’s the altered environment!
    Wow - there’s not a day that goes by that something I didn’t expect becomes clear because of you Jack and this community. This was special though!!
